| Northwestern University is pleased to offer the opportunity to apply for scholarship assistance to the children of regular, full-time Fermi Lab employees. There will be a total of $25,000 a year for the next five years in Northwestern scholarship assistance designated for these competitive awards. We anticipate that these funds will be awarded as part of the University’s need based financial aid program. In order to be considered for all possible sources of Northwestern financial support, we encourage Fermi employees to also submit applications for Northwestern institutional aid. (See Applying for Financial Aid - Application Procedures and Deadlines for instructions.)
Preference for the Fermi awards will be given to students who have already completed their sophomore year at Northwestern. The deadline date is June 1 prior to the academic year for which the aid is sought. By that date you must have completed the Fermi Scholarship Application form below, and have submitted your financial aid application material (if you seek to demonstrate financial need). It is anticipated that this Fermi Scholarship will be used to replace any need-based student loans, or alternatively, replace the work-study component of the student’s financial aid package. If there are not sufficient applicants with demonstrated need, then the funds may be awarded to qualified students not currently receiving assistance from Northwestern. In addition to financial need, prior receipt of a Northwestern/Fermi Scholarship and academic achievement will be considered in the decision to award the scholarship. If necessary, comments about applicants will be solicited from the Associate Dean or other advisor from the student’s school.
It is anticipated that five scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded; however, depending upon student need and the number of applications received for this initiative, it is possible than an individual scholarship amount may be greater or less than that figure. Northwestern reserves the right to make this adjustment. If the scholarship funds are not awarded to rising juniors, then all students (including entering students) will be considered. Scholarships are awarded for a single year, but they may be renewed as long as the student remains in good academic standing at Northwestern. Renewal requires a new application each year, along with documentation of your parent’s continued employment at Fermi Lab. If applications from qualified students exceed the resources available for this initiative, preference will be given to students who have not previously received a Northwestern/Fermi Scholarship. Funding is only available to undergraduates; graduate and professional school students are not eligible.
To apply for this scholarship, please fill out the application below, and write a letter stating the reasons why you think you should receive this scholarship; you should include your GPA, discuss your activities, including research, projects and employment. Please send this to the attention of Carolyn Lindley, Northwestern University Office of Financial Aid, along with a letter from Human Resources at Fermi Lab verifying your parent’s full time employment.
