Loan Entrance Interviews

Federal regulations require that students borrowing from the Federal Stafford and the Federal Perkins Loan Programs be made aware of their rights and responsibilities as student loan borrowers. To satisfy this requirement, first time borrowers from either loan program must complete a loan entrance interview prior to the first disbursement of their loan.

There are separate entrance counseling requirements for each loan program, therefore a student borrowing both a Stafford and a Perkins will have to complete an entrance interview for each loan. However, each entrance interview only needs to be completed once during the student's undergraduate career.

The entrance interviews must be completed online. Each entrance counseling session consists of a short tutorial followed by a quiz to test your understanding of the information presented. Topics covered include an explanation of the types of loans available, advice on how much you should borrow, when you should expect to repay your loans, and the importance of staying in touch with your lender/servicer and of maintaining accurate records of your student loans.

Federal Stafford Loan Borrowers

The Stafford entrance interview should be completed online at Mapping Your Future. This can be done before or after submitting the Master Promissory Note to your lender.

Once at the Mapping Your Future website, follow these steps to complete your Stafford Entrance Interview:

Select the appropriate link for the Stafford Entrance Counseling Session.
Select "Illinois" from the list of available states.
Select "Northwestern University (for undergraduates only) - Evanston, IL" from the list of participating institutions.
Follow the instructions, reading all of the information presented and answering the questions.
Fill out the student information form.
Upon completion of the interview, you will receive a confirmation number. Keep this number for your records. In the event that an error is encountered with the electronic transmission of your data to Northwestern, the Office of Financial Aid will need this number to retrieve your information.

Federal Perkins Loan Borrowers

The Perkins entrance interview must be completed online at iPROMise. This will be done at the same time as the Perkins Loan Application and Master Promissory Note, which are also submitted online via iPROMise. When your Perkins Loan is ready to be processed, information from Campus Partners will be sent to your Northwestern e-mail account directing you to complete these materials. You will not be able to log in to the iPROMise website to complete these materials until your Perkins Loan is ready to be processed.

Once at the iPROMise website, follow these steps to complete your Perkins loan materials:

Select "Illinois" from the list of available states.
Select "Northwestern University" from the list of participating institutions.
Fill out the student registration form.
Follow the instructions, reading all of the information presented and answering the questions.
Once you have finished the entrance interview, proceed to the Perkins Loan Application and Master Promissory Note.

Perkins and Stafford Loan borrowers will in turn be required to complete an Exit Interview just prior to graduation or upon withdrawal from the University. These sessions are conducted by the Student Loan Office. Northwestern does not at this time participate in online exit counseling.
