Argonne Scholarship

Northwestern University is pleased to offer the opportunity to apply for scholarship assistance to the children of regular, full-time Argonne National Laboratory employees. There will be a total of $40,000 a year in Northwestern scholarship assistance designated for these competitive awards. We anticipate that these funds will be awarded as part of the University's need based financial aid program. In order to be considered for all possible sources of Northwestern financial support, we encourage Argonne employees to also submit applications for Northwestern institutional aid.

Preference for these awards will be given to students who have already completed their sophomore year at Northwestern. The deadline date is June 1 prior to the academic year for which the aid is sought. By that date you must have completed the Argonne Scholarship Application form (pdf), and have submitted your financial aid application material. In addition to financial need, academic achievement will be considered in the decision to award the scholarship. Some funding will be reserved to lower the expected loan and/or work-study obligations of the recipients. If necessary, comments about applicants will be solicited from the Associate Dean or other advisor from the student's school.

It is anticipated that eight scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded; however, depending upon student need and the number of applications received for this initiative, it is possible than an individual scholarship amount may be greater or less than that figure. Northwestern reserves the right to make this adjustment. If the scholarship funds are not awarded to rising juniors, then all students (including entering students) will be considered. Scholarships are awarded for a single year, but they may be renewed as long as the student remains in good academic standing at Northwestern. Renewal requires a new application each year, along with documentation of your parent's continued employment at Argonne. Funding is only available to undergraduates; graduate and professional school students are not eligible.

To apply for this scholarship, please fill out the Argonne Scholarship Application (pdf), and write a letter stating the reasons why you think you should receive this scholarship; you should include your GPA, discuss your activities, including research, projects and employment. Please send this to the attention of Carolyn Lindley, Northwestern University Office of Financial Aid, along with a letter from Human Resources at Argonne National Lab verifying your parent's full time employment.
